Ideal for small survey footprints when operating with a single 44 mm prism ball.

This method works effectively and quickly when the survey area is small and you do not have a set of control prism balls.
* '''Mark positions:''' Outline each control magnet using a permanent marker pen so points can be re-established if disturbed.
*Place and mark around each control magnet with a permanent marker pen so that they may be re-established later if necessary.
* '''Automated routine:''' Press '''Start capture''', move the prism ball sequentially across each control magnet, and allow the software to record observations automatically.
*Press the Start Capture button, move the prism ball to each magnet, and let the system record a control point measurement.
* '''Prism specification:''' Requires a standard 44 mm diameter prism ball.
*Use a 44mm diameter prism ball.

*The control points do not have to be named, and the sequence of observation is irrelevant.

This method works well in larger areas where the control points are further apart and you have a control prism ball for each magnet.
*Place and mark around each control magnet with a permanent marker pen so that they may be re-established later if necessary.
*Direct the instrument telescope towards each control prism ball and press the '''Capture Single''' button, make sure the '''Prism''' option is set. Each control point measurement will be recorded.
*The control points do not have to be named, and the sequence of observation is irrelevant.

<div style="flex:0 0 120px; text-align:center;">
This method involves laser measurement and '''sighting''' targets through the instrument telescope. This method is slower and less accurate than prism ball measurements but can be used when control magnets are not available.

*Place control targets around the area, these can be painted or stuck on the surrounding steelwork.

Recommended for expansive survey areas where control points are widely spaced and dedicated prism balls are mounted on every magnet.

* '''Mark positions:''' Outline each control magnet using a permanent marker pen.
* '''Sighting:''' Sight the instrument telescope toward each control prism ball.
* '''Observation:''' Ensure target mode is set to '''Prism''', then press '''Capture single''' to record each observation.

Used when magnetic bases or prism balls cannot be installed. This method uses direct reflectorless laser measurements to fixed physical targets. While slightly slower and less precise than prism ball observations, it provides a reliable secondary option.

* '''Target installation:''' Apply adhesive crosshair targets or paint target marks onto surrounding structural steelwork.
* '''Sighting:''' Sight the instrument telescope precisely onto the target center point.

Control Observation Methods
Comparing capture modes, target types, and sighting workflows for field control points in automet® FAB.

Overview

Control observations can be recorded using three distinct capture methods depending on survey area dimensions and available hardware. All three techniques can be used interchangeably within a single survey.

In all methods, control point naming and observation order are handled automatically by automet® FAB.

Method 1: Start Capture (Continuous Prism Tracking)

Start capture icon

Ideal for small survey footprints when operating with a single 44 mm prism ball.

  • Mark positions: Outline each control magnet using a permanent marker pen so points can be re-established if disturbed.
  • Automated routine: Press Start capture, move the prism ball sequentially across each control magnet, and allow the software to record observations automatically.
  • Prism specification: Requires a standard 44 mm diameter prism ball.

Method 2: Capture Single Point Using Prism Balls

Capture single prism icon

Recommended for expansive survey areas where control points are widely spaced and dedicated prism balls are mounted on every magnet.

  • Mark positions: Outline each control magnet using a permanent marker pen.
  • Sighting: Sight the instrument telescope toward each control prism ball.
  • Observation: Ensure target mode is set to Prism, then press Capture single to record each observation.

Method 3: Capture Single Point Using Reflectorless Laser

Capture single laser icon

Used when magnetic bases or prism balls cannot be installed. This method uses direct reflectorless laser measurements to fixed physical targets. While slightly slower and less precise than prism ball observations, it provides a reliable secondary option.

  • Target installation: Apply adhesive crosshair targets or paint target marks onto surrounding structural steelwork.
  • Sighting: Sight the instrument telescope precisely onto the target center point.
  • Observation: Ensure target mode is set to Laser, then press Capture single to record each observation.
