The full process from in-situ survey to inspection of a replacement spool

Create an approximate design

With no existing drawing, do the following:

  • Visually inspect the flanges to determine the type, size and rating (a best guess at this stage will be fine), then tape measure the spool. Keep a lookout for short-radius elbows and non-standard bends.
  • Create a design .DES file by entering the spool as fitting to fitting, then add the pipe lengths measured with the tape. This will create a preliminary design to load at the time of the survey.

Carry out a site survey

This Site Survey Overviewvideo provides details of the general site-survey capture process.

Transform the site survey to the required orientation

Take circle fits to help orientate the spool and define the pipe centres at import locations. To help this process, carry out the previous steps carefully.

This Translate Survey Data to Optimal Orientation video is the first part of the process of creating a user-friendly fabrication deliverable and will make the interpretation of the survey report easier to follow and manufacture.

Create a text report

Go back to the main menu and press the text report button.

The text report is displayed and a PDF version can be created. Use the PDF report to create the deliverable.

Edit the design to create a deliverable

Do not write over the design file - create a new deliverable file.

This Create Deliverable video shows how to create a deliverable from the text report.

Check the deliverable by fitting the original survey to the new deliverable

This is a valuable cross-check. If the original survey file fits the new deliverable file with zero errors, then a spool manufactured according to this data will exactly match the original.

This Cross check deliverable video will explain how to cross-check the deliverable.

Inspect the replacement spool during fabrication

To complete the process, use automet® to help inspect the replacement spool. This process will result in a perfect replacement pipe spool.
