Automet® FAB - Start New Survey
Start New
Selecting Start new generates a survey file using the name of the active design file, appending the specified survey stage and revision number.
Continue Existing
If a survey is incomplete or requires additional data capture, select Continue existing to reload all previously recorded observations. For this option to remain valid, neither the pipe spool nor the instrument must have moved, or the survey file must contain control points that can be remeasured.
Applications for Continuing an Existing Survey
Power interruption during capture
If power to the instrument or laptop is interrupted, select Continue existing to return directly to the previous step in the capture routine without data loss. To confirm system stability, measure a known point (such as a bolt hole) using the Point option and compare new coordinates against recorded data.
Working with multiple spools
Using Continue existing allows operators to load an active survey and resume data collection without surveying the entire spool again. Any saved survey file can be reloaded, provided the spool and instrument positions remain unchanged.
Repositioning spool components
When moving or adjusting a spool component, loading the existing survey routine allows previously captured data for that specific item to be deleted and resurveyed. This process can be repeated as needed, provided the main spool body and instrument setup remain undisturbed.
Spools with established control points
When control points have been established on a spool or vessel, selecting Continue existing loads the file containing those reference points. The automet® FAB software appends new measurement data directly to the active file. Because control points are anchored to the structure, the spool or vessel can be moved between survey sessions.
Survey files with external control points
When a survey file contains control points within the surrounding work area, use Continue existing to resume operations. Before recording additional features, the automet® FAB software prompts the user to measure a minimum of four control points to re-establish spatial alignment.
