Coordinate Systems Comparison

Rectangular (Cartesian)
The rectangular system is the most common way to locate pipe components. It uses three mutually perpendicular axes (X, Y, and Z) to define a position from a fixed origin point.

Directions correspond to main plant axes:

  • ±X: East / West
  • ±Y: North / South
  • ±Z: Elevation (Up / Down)

Polar
Defines a 3D direction vector from a center point using two specific angles: azimuth and zenith.

Key angular definitions:

  • Azimuth: The horizontal angle (0–360°) measured clockwise from North (+Y). 90° is East, 180° is South, and 270° is West.
  • Zenith: The vertical angle (0–180°) measured down from the +Z axis (straight up). 90° is horizontal.
